VILLA CHULUCANOS- WHY A PRESCHOOL OR COMMUNITY CENTER?
The director, Ernesto, from a local NGO called AMASOL, showed our group, HELP International, a squatter settlement. (a group of people see unused land and so they live there) And so the government does not recognize them yet (they are in that process) so there is no one to fund the construction of a school. Ernesto informed us of their need for a preschool.
The older kids travel outside of the settlement to go to colegio but the little kids (preschoolers) attend school in someone's backyard with sand/dirt floors and unstable chairs and tables. Their teacher is committed to the kids. In Peru, preschool is mandatory so the kids need to go to school is some way, shape, or form. Their parents are from the jungle so their preschool education is a crucial influence-er in their future education in colegio. The room that the kids are using now has a roof that is made of aluminum so it uncontrollably heats up the room because the sun is really penetrating.
If this preschool is built then the kids will have a schoolroom that won't hurt their health and it will promote learning. The community will have a school building. Since preschool is only in the mornings, we are also going to turn it into community center for the adults. Support is really important among the people of Piura (and I am sure many other places), especially women and children because support and friendship carries people through hardship.
